Under the terms of their contracts, players are strictly prohibited from betting on any football matches, globally. To help them meet this standard, players have been given access to FIFPRO’s Red Button app—a secure platform designed to allow players to report any match-fixing approaches they may encounter.
Since its launch in 2020, the Red Button app has served as an essential tool for safeguarding the integrity of the sport. It provides a confidential, easy-to-use method for players to report concerns about match-fixing or suspicious betting activity. By promoting the app, the PFA ensures that players are well-equipped to protect the game and maintain its fairness.
As part of its commitment to educating players on integrity issues, the PFA has also partnered with EPIC Risk Management to organize a gambling education webinar later in the season. This initiative aims to further support players in understanding the risks associated with betting, as well as the importance of avoiding any actions that could jeopardise their career or the sport’s credibility.
Protecting Players from Online Harassment with GoBubble
Another key area discussed during the PFA’s training sessions is the issue of online abuse and harassment. In addition to the risks players face on the field and in their digital lives, the PFA’s integrity training also covers the complexities of managing player-agent relationships. With recent global reforms to the player-agent system, it is crucial for players to understand their rights and responsibilities when it comes to working with agents.
As of October 2023, FIFA has implemented new regulations requiring that all player agents must pass the FIFA Agent exam and be fully licensed to practice. This is part of a broader effort to ensure transparency and professionalism in the agent-player relationship. The PFA has made it a priority to educate players on these regulations, helping them navigate this important aspect of their career and avoid potential pitfalls.

Erin Clout, the PFA’s Head of Player Relations, Women, highlighted the importance of this educational approach in ensuring players can meet the high standards expected of them. “As the face of the game, players are subjected to the highest level of criticism when it comes to matters of integrity in sport,” Clout explained. “To be appropriately held against these standards, it’s absolutely paramount that the players are educated on all expectations the industry has of them, both on and off the football field.”
